Anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are the plant pigments responsible for the deep red color of tart cherries.  These potent antioxidants belong to a group of compounds called the flavonoids, and have been linked to a variety of health benefits, including protection against heart disease.

Melatonin. Cherries are one of the few known food sources of melatonin, a potent antioxidant produced naturally by the body’s pineal gland that helps regulate biorhythm and natural sleep patterns. Experts indicate that just a handful of cherries contain more melatonin than what is normally found in the blood.

Other antioxidants – tart cherries contain at least 17 antioxidants, including powerful antioxidants egallic acid, p-coumaric acid, kaempferol and quercetin.

Cherries also contain potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, vitamins A, C, B6, E, and folic acid. Tart cherries have virtually no fat and no sodium.
